The crafty bug has really hit me this fall! This past week, I made several fabric pumpkins, a Halloween sign, and this cute little guy to add to my collection of Halloween and fall decor:
This little mummy was so easy to make!
Here are the materials I used:
Small rectangular piece of lumber (mine was leftover from building the kids' swing set this summer)
Muslin (off white)
2 Large white buttons
2 Small black buttons
Fabric scissors
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Ruler
First, I cut the muslin. One was just the right size to completely cover the block of wood. The second was a long skinny strip (about 3 inches wide, which was perfect for the size of my piece of wood).
It doesn't matter if the muslin is cut perfectly straight because it's going to be folded and then angled when it's wrapped around the wooden block. Also, it's fine if it's wrinkled and frayed. I think that adds to the mummy look.
Then, I wrapped the piece of wood like a present with the larger piece of muslin, making sure the seams were on the bottom and sides, and securing them with the hot glue gun.
Next, I took the long strip and folded it at an angle. Then, I wrapped it around the block at angles, making sure the muslin strip lined up with the top and bottom of the wooden block. (It still looked angled even though they were lined up because the strip itself was folded at an angle.)
I secured the muslin strip with hot glue on the back each time I wrapped around the wooden block.
I also made sure that the way I wrapped it would leave overlap for the eyes. You'll see what I mean in a minute!
Also, it didn't matter what the back looked like for me because this little mummy will be setting on a shelf or my mantel.
Next, I hot glued each black button on each white button, creating the mummy's eyes. And then I hot glued the eyes in place, overlapping some of the muslin over part of the white button.
