2017 Word & Verse of the Year: FIAT, Luke 1:38

It was nearly mid-January, and here I was, still trying to find the right word for me for 2017.  Last year, the word and verse Clean and Psalm 51:12 jumped out to me very quickly.  But everything I came up with for this year just didn't seem to fit.

Last week, I started working on a new design that I'm creating for my shop with the word Fiat.  And it clicked.  Fiat.  I just knew God was telling me this is what I need to focus on this year!

As a Catholic woman, I've always admired Mary's Fiat: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord.  May it be done to me according to your word." (Luke 1:38)  What surrender to God's will.  Her "Yes" changed not just her, but the whole world forever.

And that's what God is calling me to (although obviously on much smaller scale!): changing the world through my everyday "yeses" to His will for me and my family.

What does this mean for me?  Being gentle and patient in discipline.  Trusting God when it comes to our medical issues.  Making sure I pray everyday.  Leaning on His abundant love.  Truly living in the everyday moments.  Saying "yes" to the little things, like cleaning the kitchen without complaining and reading the kids the same book over and over again.  Loving what God has given me.

So my one goal this year will be to work on prayer.  That will be my focus because, well, everything - including being able to give my fiat in the everyday life moments - will flow from a healthy spiritual life.  And I want my prayer life to really be talking and listening to God.  Because how can I hear His will for me unless I open my heart and soul to Him through honest prayer?

And speaking of honesty, the word Fiat scares me.  So does Thy will be done.  These are hard prayers!  All I want is to complain, resist, and have control.  But Fiat says, I trust in You; I give my whole self to You.  That is so hard, but so worth it.

What does your "fiat" look like today?

I'm saying "Yes" to kids books, prayer time, cleaning the kitchen and bathrooms, folding laundry, building train tracks, setting up for a church event later, and playing Hullabaloo with the kids.

Every little fiat, every little "yes" is truly important in building up the church, especially the domestic church at home.

How are you saying "May it be done to me according to Your word" in your everyday life?

My soon-to-be new favorite shirt!

I'm so excited to have this new T-shirt from Brick House in the City to help me keep my Fiat at the top of my mind!  Which I definitely need to be reminded of everyday in my vocation of motherhood!

I'll also have my Fiat print at my computer desk (pictured at the top of the post) to help me focus too.  And I'll release my new Fiat print I'll probably prominently display it somewhere in my house too!

What is your word for the year?  And how do you keep your word in focus for the entire year?

Can't wait to hear about your word and focus for the year!

In case you missed it...

Earlier this week I posted 2016: Our Year In Review, including some amazing ups and some extremely difficult downs...and why I treasure it all.  And this upcoming Tuesday, I'll be sharing all of my family's saints for the year.  See you then!  2017 will be a year filled with hope!
