Our Church Bag - Quiet Bag Ideas for Kids

We have reached the point in church where both kids want down and are a little more active. We don't have a nursery or kid's service, so they stay with us during Mass. Some weeks, they are still tired (we go to church at 7:30 am), but other weeks...it can be crazy town and I'm not sure what the readings, sermon, etc were about at all.

We just started bringing a special bag with us - Abby calls it her 'church purse' - with items it in that are only used during church. Right now, we have a few things, but I would like to find some more so we can start rotating through them. If anyone has any great quiet toy ideas, please share!! :)

Here is what we have so far:

Abby is 3, and she plays with Lace and Trace toys, and reads through some small Saint chapter books with lots of pictures. I also made her a little prayer book out of a photo album - it's full of holy cards and religious pictures. Now we are just working on her staying quiet while she is 'reading' :)

Tim is almost 1, and he really wants down to walk/crawl around. We keep him in our laps, and so far, he likes playing with his Taggie blanket or rosary toy. His favorite books are Touch and Feel type of books, especially Pat the Bunny...anything to keep him busy and not fussing!

Do you bring a special bag to church? What are your tips and tricks to keeping kids quiet during church? I'd appreciate any advice! :)

  1. I love your bag items. My 3 year old goes to his own sunday school class, but my 7 year old loves to come to worship. She brings pens/crayons/pencils and activity books. She also brings her Bible and is able to follow along during the scripture passage. :)

I love your items - my boys are 6 and 4 - so we have a notebook for coloring and drawing. I also get maze books, puzzle books, and hidden picture books! I try to have some new stickers and their Bible as well. :) Even if they don't always follow along during the message, I make them stand up and participate n the singing.

  3. Love the church bag idea! We keep Jude with us in big church, and I think a quiet bag and/or book will be needed soon!

Quiet bags in church are a great idea. Our church has these for parents and it is great if I forget to bring my own.

  5. Oh, that is so precious that little Abby calls it her "church purse". They are so adorable and sweet! Oh, for time to rewind enough to take us back to the days of our son being so little!! I know how challenging it is to try to keep them still in church, and I can so remember those frustrating moments when I would walk out the door having gotten nothing out of the service. But, the thing you are doing is so much more important, sweet friend. You are doing a wonderful job in this season of life, and God is with you. The things I found to be most useful in Zach's busy bag was anything he could do with his hands...the little lace project your daughter does is so perfect. If it is project-oriented and something that provides a goal for them to complete, it seems to hold their attention through a process and will last longer and keep them determined to complete something until it is done...quietly opening and closing things, pulling things apart projects, etc. God bless you and your sweet family!

  6. That is so cute that there's a soft rosary! Our kiddos often go to the nursery, but when they don't, our church has kids' bags. I also tried for a while to have a backpack that was just Sunday toys so it made it special. We've told our 5 year old that he'll be going to church with us this fall since he'll be in Kindergarten, so we will need to start the bag back up. The lacing cards are wonderful!

  7. I like the idea of a church purse! What about having one of those soft activity books with buttons to button, zippers, laces, etc? Or interactive board books with flaps? A teether might be a fun option for Tim or maybe some small cars to push along the pew? It's tricky to come up with things that are quiet and fun!

We always have a church bag for our (now 4-year-old) daughter, either a purse or backpack. I have found that the best things for her are surprises. Either a new little coloring pack she has never seen or something from her room that she has forgot about. I try not to let her see me pack her bag, so when she gets to open it at church it is "all new" and entertains a little longer.

  9. Pat the Bunny was such a staple for us from about 8 months to 15 months! HA! The new favorite is lacing things and coloring. Church bags are vital for us, because we are usually at church from about 10:30 - 2:00... so it's a long day to keep a toddler entertained and quiet. We also have to pack plenty of snacks, too.

  10. I need to put together a quiet bag for our little one. Love these ideas. <3

  11. Great ideas! I've never packed a bag for Hope (downfall of being the third kiddo!). I let her draw with a pen on the church notes - she thinks that's a super big treat! :) Thanks for sharing at Waiting on...Wednesday!

I love reading your comments - it makes my day! :) Thanks for dropping by!
