Our Grandpa

The closer we get to springtime being here - birds chirping, flowers everywhere - the more I am thinking of my grandpa. My grandpa passed away three months ago, and I am really missing his happy spirit. He was a master gardener and was always so proud of his flowers every year.

This picture is about ten years old - it's my favorite one of my grandparents :)

He watched us a lot as kids and we have so many fun memories...days spent at the park, eating Twinkies and lemon ice cream together, visiting the retired sisters at a local church... he was just one of those people you wanted to be around. Grandpa had a great love for Notre Dame, and he is the reason why they are our favorite football team.

My favorite picture of me with my grandpa (2004 - my high school grad party)

For his 85th birthday (last summer), we had a huge 'surprise' party - thrown by him ;) He loved celebrating his special day every year. My favorite birthday tradition comes from him - after you get done singing Happy Birthday, you bang on pots and pans. Whenever someone in our family has a birthday, we always call to 'pot and pan' them. He said he had always done that as a kid, and I'm happy to pass that on! :)

At the birthday party - Grandpa and Tim :) The oldest and youngest members of the family

Earlier in the week, out of nowhere, Abby came up and told me "Your Grandpa says don't worry, he's with the angels and Jesus in Heaven. And he said the Pope gave him some red candy because they are friends."  I'm not sure where that came from, but it made me smile. :)

It's hard to sum up how much someone means to you, and a lot of times you don't realize it until they are gone. I wish I could get one more of his hugs, and hopefully I can someday. And maybe he'll share some of those red candies with me! ;)

Grandpa, you are truly missed. We love you so much!

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and light perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

  3. Such a sweet sweet post. I love when kids do things like that, one time during church Marissa asked me who was singing (when nobody was) then she replied, "Oh it must be the angels". I bawled.

You'll have to ask grandpa about the red candy someday :). Hugs friend.

  8. Wow this hits home. My grandpa's birthday (if he were still on this earth) would be tomorrow (March 7th) he loved spring - gardened - was a remarkable human being. The picture you have up of your grandpa with the baby reminds me of one of the last pictures of my own with my daughter (his first great)....melts and breaks my heart all at one time. Please know my heart feels your sorrow and joy. The awesome part....one day we'll be with them again!!!

  9. Wow, I just visited your blog from the Friday link up, and this post was just what I needed to read. My grandfather passed away last month (today would have been his 95th bday), so it was very nice to read about your wonderful memories. Brought a smile to my face on this sad day.
