Monthly Resolution: Being Thankful

Resolution:  Being thankful.

And not just being thankful, but keeping it at the top of my mind throughout the day.  With Thanksgiving coming up, it's the perfect month to keep it at the forefront.

Lately, I've noticed that I have been complaining too much about little things and inconveniences.  My back hurts.  The internet isn't fast enough.  The kids are misbehaving.  I failed at being patient again.  I focus on the good things I don't have.  And it seriously is bringing me down and making me grouchy.

Last year, I came across this on Verily's Daily Dose (if you don't follow Verily, you should...it's seriously the best!):

I'm grumpy because I focus on what I don't have.  I need to turn this around ASAP.  I need to focus on the beautiful things I do have...and to see the things I don't have in a different light.

So the game plan for this month:

Not just me, but my whole family is going to write down one (or more) thing(s) we're grateful for on a little piece of paper everyday.  Then, we're going to attach it to a string to make a Thankful Garland across our living room mantle.

So everyday we think and see all of the blessings we have in our lives.

And we'll also try to see the inconveniences not just as crosses, but as blessings too.  (And oh, how I saw this firsthand in our infertility struggle too!  But how soon I forget!)

Suffering gives us a chance to grow in virtue.  I need to see these inconveniences as opportunities to grow.  And be thankful for these trials too.  (You know, the "overcoming adversity" stuff we always hear about on ESPN and the nightly news. ;)

So we will add these to our Thankful Garland as well.

The goal this month is to truly see and focus on the blessings in the big and everyday things we encounter daily.  And prayerfully, in turn this will lead us to having more joyful and grateful hearts and attitudes.

  1. Oh wow! I love that -- focusing on what you DO have rather than what you don't -- such brilliant simplicity. What beautiful graphics --thanks for introducing me to Verily as well! 1. Thanks! I'm really glad we found your blog. I really enjoying doing goals together...even if our goals are different. Thanks for hosting! I know you'll love Verily - I'm glad I could introduce you. I got the final pieces for the garland today so we can hang up what we've done so far. I'll post pics soon. This goal has definitely been the best so far....I can already see a big change in how I'm seeing things and how I feel. I'm definitely more joyful...and at peace. Thanks for stopping by! -Jess

  2. I really like the idea of a monthly resolution! Lately I've been studying the old testament and God's faithfulness to the Israelites, it never fails to put life into perspective and remember his goodnesss.

    1. I think it really hit me because a hard time that a friend is going through right now. And she doesn't complain at all. And here I am complaining about these little things when her problems are life and death. You really don't realize how much you complain in a day...until you try to stop. It's quite the challenge indeed! -Jess
